If you’re one of the millions who’ve had to readjust to working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you may be wondering whether you need to be doing things a bit differently — including tidying up and cleaning your home office.
Well, wonder no more.
Our company, Green Clean Restoration, offers COVID-19 cleaning as one of our services. So, for you and your family’s health and safety, we’re happy to share the following COVID-19 cleaning tips for your home office:
1. Get your cleaning supplies together.
It’s good to know that a number of widely available cleaning agents and disinfectants are effective against coronaviruses in general, including the type that causes COVID-19. So, be ready with your glass cleaner, floor cleaner, duster, microfiber cloths, sponges, detergent, vacuum cleaner and bags, waste bags and your washing-up liquid. We strongly recommend using eco-friendly cleaning products that are effective disinfectants yet gentle and safe for the environment.
Wear cleaning gloves to protect your hands and a cleaning apron to prevent your clothes from getting soiled, as well as shoe covers — especially if you’re cleaning an old, unused space you’ll be converting into your workspace.
2. Open the windows to ventilate the area prior to cleaning.
Make sure to only start dusting and cleaning when the windows are open, or there is sufficient ventilation. Whether your home office is in the garage, basement, attic or elsewhere in the house, air should be freely circulating when you do your cleaning work.
3. Start by cleaning all surfaces.
Use warm soapy water for cleaning surfaces, but pay extra attention to high-touch ones, like door handles, light switches, tables, rails of any kind, and countertops. Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe down these areas, and make sure you start from higher areas to prevent re-contaminating what has already been cleaned.
However, be extra careful when wiping light switches and electrical socket covers and ensure no moisture is dripping from your cleaning cloths. After cleaning, quickly disinfect these surfaces to ensure any remaining pathogens are killed.
By the way, make sure your PC, keyboard and other office equipment are adequately cleaned and disinfected as well.
4. Clean soft furnishings.
If your home office has a sofa or other soft furnishings, do not shake these as the dust will start flying all over the place and possibly bring germs farther out. Instead, vacuum these items with your cleaner’s soft brush attachment. Anything that’s soiled needs to be cleaned per manufacturer’s recommendations.
5. Vacuum and mop up the floor.
Before doing any mopping, vacuum the floor first, ensuring any visible dirt and debris are suctioned away. Vacuum as far into the edges and corners of the room as possible. After this, you can start mopping the floor with warm water and your preferred floor cleaning agent. Mop using the figure-eight motion as you work your way out of the room.
6. Properly dispose your cleaning gloves and shoe covers.
Disposable cleaning items need to be properly discarded and included in the household waste. Put these inside a small waste bag, seal or tie the end of the bag and throw it into your garbage receptacle. After you've thrown away your cleaning gear, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds using warm soapy water.
